5-Methylisoxazole-3-carboxamide (5MI3C) is a novel antibacterial agent that has an excellent safety profile. 5MI3C inhibits mycobacterium tuberculosis and is active against other bacteria such as Mycobacterium avium complex, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. It is effective in inhibiting the growth of these bacteria in the presence of macrophages. 5MI3C also has significant antitubercular activity and can be used to treat tuberculosis. The chemical ligation reaction of 5MI3C with hepg2 cell histones H1 and H3 leads to acetylation and alkylation, respectively. This results in a decrease in histone acetyltransferase activity and an increase in histone deacetylase activity, which may account for its anti-inflammatory effects.
