Description

Methyl 1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylate is an organic compound that can be prepared by electrolysis of a solution of dimethylformamide in the presence of a platinum electrode. It is used as a precursor to other chemical compounds, such as dibenzothiophene and benzothiazolium salts. The compound is also used in cyclic voltammetry and cyclic voltammetric methods. Methyl 1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylate is a dimer with two identical anionic radicals attached to each benzene ring. The electron affinity for these radicals is very high due to resonance stabilization which leads to efficient electron transfer from the electrode to the radical anion.
