N-Methyl-1-(4-methylphenyl)methanamine is a cationic anion with the chemical formula NHCH(CH3)2. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and organic solvents. The compound has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of carboxylic acid transfer reactions, such as esterification, nitration, and chlorination. N-Methyl-1-(4-methylphenyl)methanamine can also act as a proton donor, which allows it to participate in hydroxide exchange reactions. The compound reacts with anions such as chloride and bromide to form ionic species with the formula NHCH2Cl or NHCHBr. This reaction can be used to determine the concentration of these ions using NMR spectroscopy.
