5-Methylquinolin-8-ol is a natural compound that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of diarrhoea-causing bacteria. This compound binds to the metal ion and prevents it from interacting with the active site of the enzyme, which is required for its catalytic activity. It also inhibits bacterial morphology by binding to the enzyme at a different site from where it would bind if it were not bound by 5-Methylquinolin-8-ol. The ability of this compound to bind to metal ions and enzymes makes it a promising candidate for treating infectious diseases caused by metal ion or enzyme dependent organisms. 5-Methylquinolin-8-ol has also been shown to be biocompatible in a study using Covid-19 cells, which are human intestinal cells that mimic the function of human intestine cells.
