Description

6-Methoxynicotinic acid is a metabolite of nicotine that has been shown to have antibacterial properties. It binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and inhibits the enzyme 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the conversion of 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A to hydroxyacyl coenzyme A. This prevents the synthesis of fatty acids and leads to cell death. 6-Methoxynicotinic acid also has been shown to inhibit the growth of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other bacteria by binding to their nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. 6-Methoxynicotinic acid is an analog of niacin.
