3-Methylfuroate is an apolar compound that can be found in the rhizomes of macroalga. The structure of 3-methylfuroate has been analyzed using nmr spectra. The hydroxymethyl group is stereoselective and the 3-methyl group is located on the opposite side of the carbonyl group, which allows for its use as a model system for stereoselectivity. It also has a volatile odor and can be found in solvents such as ethanol and acetone. 3-Methylfuroate can be extracted from macroalgae using headspace microextraction.
