3-Methylcatechol is a benzoquinone that is synthesized from protocatechuic acid. The synthesis of 3-methylcatechol can be achieved by the reaction of benzyl groups with hydrochloric acid, followed by the addition of sodium carbonate and an inorganic acid. This compound has been used to prepare a model system for studying transfer reactions involving hydroxyl groups and fatty acids. The synthesis of 3-methylcatechol can also be achieved by the conversion of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde with sodium carbonate and an inorganic acid.
