2-Methylbenzaldehyde is a diphenolase enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of phenols to benzoic acid. It has been shown to have a redox potential of +0.97 volts and a cationic polymerization activity in the presence of copper ions. This enzyme is activated by intramolecular hydrogen bonds and uv absorption, but is inhibited by polycarboxylic acids, hydroxyl groups, and carbonyl groups. 2-Methylbenzaldehyde has been used in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of fatty acids.
