5-Methoxy-2-methylphenol (5MMP) is a phenolic compound that is produced by the reaction of an aromatic alcohol with hydrogen peroxide. It is also known as monophenol, monophenyl ether, or methylphenyl ether. 5MMP has been shown to be an equilibrium mixture of two isomers: 5-methoxy-2-methylbenzaldehyde and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol. 5MMP can be synthesized by the photolysis of benzal chloride in the presence of oxygen and light. This reaction produces benzene, hydrogen peroxide, and benzoic acid. The photolysis of benzal chloride involves two steps. In the first step, a chlorine ion abstracts a hydrogen atom from benzal chloride to produce chlorobenzene and an HCl molecule.
