2-Methoxy-5-methylaniline is a diazonium salt that has been used as a wastewater treatment chemical. It can be synthesized from 2-methoxy-5-nitroaniline and sodium hypochlorite in the presence of sodium citrate. This chemical has shown potential as a biomarker for bladder cancer, but it is not carcinogenic to mice or rats. 2-Methoxy-5-methylaniline is toxic to the urinary tract, causing bladder and urothelial carcinoma in CD1 mice. This chemical also inhibits IGF production and causes cell lysis by hydrolysis of amines.
