1-Methoxynaphthalene is a reactive aliphatic hydrocarbon that can be used as an antioxidant. It has been shown to scavenge radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation in vitro. 1-Methoxynaphthalene also has the ability to activate the transfer reactions of electron donors, such as fatty acids, which may be due to its radical coupling activity. The molecule has two isomers, 1-methoxy-2-naphthol and 2-methoxy-1-naphthol. The former is more stable than the latter at room temperature but less stable at higher temperatures. Molecular modeling studies have shown that the hydroxyl group on C1 of 1-methoxynaphthalene can coordinate with metal ions such as copper(II) or zinc(II).
