Methyl 5-hydroxypicolinate (5OHPC) is a potent antimicrobial agent that binds to the response element-binding protein, which is an important transcriptional factor in the expression of genes necessary for bacterial cell growth. 5OHPC has been shown to have hemolytic activity and can be used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. The plasma drug concentration of methyl 5-hydroxypicolinate can be determined using a sample preparation technique with a matrix effect. This drug also inhibits 17β-estradiol induced proliferation of human breast cancer cells by binding to the estrogen receptor, potentially leading to clinical applications as an anti-breast cancer agent.
