2-Methylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one is a white solid with a molecular weight of 174.2 and a melting point of 108°C. It is soluble in water and in n-hexane, but insoluble in ether and chloroform. This compound has been shown to have an ultraviolet absorption spectrum between 260nm and 310nm, as well as an ultraviolet spectroscopic constant of 1.00x10cm/mM/cm. 2-Methylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one can be synthesized from the reaction of pyrimidine, formaldehyde, and hydrogen peroxide. The main use for this chemical is for the production of lactams, which are used to produce polymers such as nylon or polyester. 2-Methylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one can also be used to synthesize purines or aldehydes that are used to create pharmaceuticals or herbicides
