5-Methoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione is an isomer of a molecule that has been identified as a possible cholinesterase inhibitor. It inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine. 5-Methoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione binds to the active site of the enzyme and forms a covalent bond with the serine hydroxyl group. This modification prevents the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by cholinesterase and leads to rapid accumulation of acetylcholine at synapses.
