4-Methylcoumarin is a reactive compound that has been shown to be an irreversible inhibitor of hepg2 cell, which is a cell line derived from human erythrocytes. It has also been shown to inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in cells. 4-Methylcoumarin acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. It is also used as a model system for cancer research. The photochemical properties of 4-methylcoumarin have been extensively studied and it has been found that this molecule absorbs light most strongly at 270 nm, with a maximum absorption peak at about 300 nm.
