MC has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis, leading to apoptotic cell death. It has also been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. The fluorophore 7-methoxycoumarin is derived from the natural product coumarin and can be used as a fluorescent probe for hydrogen bonding in molecular modeling studies.
