2-Methyloctane is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with a boiling point of about 155°C at atmospheric pressure. It is a colorless liquid that has a viscosity of about 2.6 cst and a density of 0.79 g/mL at 20°C. 2-Methyloctane is not toxic, but it can be degraded by exposure to radiation or chlorine gas. It has been used as a solvent in the manufacture of glycol ethers and as a diluent for gasoline and diesel fuel. The chemical formula for 2-methyloctane is CH3(CH2)8CH3.
2-Methyloctane is also known as methyl octane, octyl methyl ether, and 1-methylheptadecane.
