Atropine sulphate is a cholinergic drug used to treat bowel disease. It inhibits the muscarinic receptors in the autonomic nervous system by binding to them, which leads to increased parasympathetic activity and decreased sympathetic activity. Atropine sulphate has been shown to inhibit the production of light-induced bronchoconstriction in an animal model of asthma. This drug also has cardiac effects, such as slowing heart rate and reducing blood pressure. The therapeutic effect of atropine sulphate on inflammatory bowel disease is most likely due to its ability to inhibit the immune system.
