Description

2,6-Ditert-butyl-4-methylidene cyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one (BHT) is a reactive compound that can act as a growth factor. It can be reduced by two electrons to form the methylene radical and is also known as 2,6-ditertiary butylhydroquinone or dithiobis(methylene). BHT protects cells against oxygen radicals, which are thought to be involved in tumorigenic processes. BHT has been shown to inhibit transcriptional regulation of the tumorigenic gene p53 and to have an antitumor effect in CD-1 mice. The cytosolic location of BHT suggests that it may act directly on DNA. Chronic exposure of rats to BHT led to lung damage.
