Methyl 5-hydroxy-2-benzimidazole carbamate is an insecticide that has been used as a pesticide to control the growth of nematodes, insects, and fungi. It is metabolized in the body to carbaryl and 5-hydroxy-2-benzimidazole carboxylic acid. Methyl 5-hydroxy-2-benzimidazole carbamate is found in urine samples at high concentrations. This pesticide has been shown to cause dose dependent genotoxic effects in humans, including gene expression changes and chromosomal aberrations. Environmental exposure to this substance may be due to its use as a pesticide on plants or in the production of other chemicals. The metabolic products of methyl 5-hydroxy-2 benzimidazole carbamate are hydrogen peroxide and methyl 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate.
