Description :
Methyl isoamyl ether is a glycol ether that is used as a chemical solvent. It has a high viscosity, which is useful for dissolving ester compounds and aromatic hydrocarbons. Methyl isoamyl ether also has a low boiling point, making it suitable to be used in reactions involving halogen compounds. This compound can be synthesized by adding ethylene oxide to amyl alcohol and reacting the product with hydrogen chloride gas.
Methyl isoamyl ether can react with hydrochloric acid to form particles that are less than one micrometer in diameter. The synthesis of methyl isoamyl ether can also be used as an indicator for the presence of hydroxyl group on the molecule.
