3-Methylbenzothiazolium Iodide is a viologen that has been used to detect and measure radiation. It has been shown to have a high affinity for silver ions, styryl dyes, and benzothiazolium. 3-Methylbenzothiazolium Iodide reacts with the carboxyl groups of proteins in the presence of light to produce a photocurrent. This photocurrent can be detected using an ammeter and lead to the determination of protein concentration. 3-Methylbenzothiazolium Iodide has also been used as a fluorescent probe in DNA sequencing reactions. The reaction produces fluorescence when excited by low-energy radiation such as ultraviolet or visible light.
