Methylphenidate is a stimulant drug used in the treatment of ADHD and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as narcolepsy. It is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that affects certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Methylphenidate is also used to treat symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease, bowel disease, and bacterial strains that are resistant to antibiotics. Methylphenidate has been shown to block the release of histamine from mast cells in a constant pressure assay by preventing the conversion of methoxyphenamine into methylhistamine. This mechanism may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties. Methylphenidate also has anti-inflammatory effects on autoimmune diseases such as chronic cough and diabetic neuropathy. The chemical stability of methylphenidate is good at room temperature, but it will degrade when exposed to light or air for an extended period of time.
