Methylcyclopentadiene dimer is a reactive chemical species that is used as a polymeric matrix. It is formed by cationic polymerization of methylcyclopentadiene, which can be carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid. Methylcyclopentadiene dimer has a particle size between 10 and 100 nm, and is used to study the reaction rate for organic acids. It has been shown that zirconium dichloride can serve as a suitable catalyst for this process. The rate of reaction increases with increasing temperature and constant pressure, with activation energies at around -150 kJ/mol. Methylcyclopentadiene dimer contains functional groups such as C=C and C-C-H bonds, which are important for the reactivity of this chemical species.
