Molybdenum carbide is a reactive material that can be used in the production of semiconductors and other electronic devices. It is produced by laser ablation of molybdenum metal. Molybdenum carbide is typically used as an additive to increase the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Molybdenum carbide particles are formed by the reaction between molybdic acid, hydrogen ions, and carbon at high temperature. The reaction mechanism is not well understood, but it may involve an intermediate such as Mo(CO)2, MoO2, or MoO3. The overpotential for this reaction is low because of the strong affinity between molybdenum and oxygen atoms. This affinity has been shown in experiments using human serum as a model system. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been used to study how this interaction affects the thermal expansion coefficient of molybdenum carbide powder.
