3-Mercaptoindole is an organic compound that belongs to the class of heterocycles. It is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 146°C. 3-Mercaptoindole can be used as an alkylating agent in the production of various chemicals, including ethylbenzene and polystyrene. This compound has also been found to have anticancer properties, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro. 3-Mercaptoindole binds to DNA with high affinity and inhibits DNA synthesis by inhibiting RNA transcription. The mechanism of inhibition may involve the generation of reactive oxygen species through its catalytic function as a strong oxidant.
