1-(9-Mercaptononyl)-3,6,9-trioxaundecan-11-ol (1MTA) is a reactive compound that belongs to the group of 3-mercaptopropionic acid. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis in vitro. 1MTA binds to the surface of bacteria and forms an immunocomplex with streptavidin. This complex is used for microscopy studies and can be immobilized onto surfaces for use as coatings or for other applications such as in photoelectron spectroscopy. The primary function of 1MTA is its ability to form a supramolecular monolayer on a substrate, which serves as an anti-adhesive coating that prevents bacterial attachment and biofilms formation.
