6-Methoxy-5-nitroquinoline (6MNQ) is a nitro compound that has been shown to cause DNA damage in human colon carcinoma cells. 6MNQ binds to the chloride ion, which is part of the chloride gas molecule and can be detected by a technique called gas chromatography. The chloride ion reacts with the nitro group in 6MNQ. This reaction leads to the formation of hydrogen chloride, which can react with water to form hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive and can destroy all cell membranes. The reactive chlorine atoms from the hydrogen chloride molecule are also able to attack DNA at their base level, causing double strand breaks. 6MNQ has been shown to inhibit acetanilide reductase activity, an enzyme involved in the metabolism of acetanilides.
