Description

Methyl 6-oxohexanoate is a synthetic molecule that is structurally related to nigrum. It has been shown to be hydrolyzed by the enzyme β-oxidation process, which converts methyl 6-oxohexanoate into fatty acids and ketones. Methyl 6-oxohexanoate can also undergo a series of reactions in which it reacts with an ozone molecule, forming ozonides. The geometric isomers of methyl 6-oxohexanoate are also known as cis and trans forms, which differ in their physical properties due to the orientation of their hydroxyl group on the double bond. The cis form is more stable than the trans form because it has less steric hindrance from neighboring groups.
