4-Methyl ethynyl estradiol (4ME2) is a synthetic estrogen that has been used to treat breast cancer, endometriosis, and other estrogen-dependent conditions. 4ME2 can be synthesized by the reaction of estradiol with methyl iodide in an organic solvent such as acetonitrile. The synthesis of 4ME2 is linear and reproducible. The recovery of 4ME2 was found to be 96% for the analysis of two batches using a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The method was validated and approved for routine use by the FDA.
