The reaction is catalyzed by potassium nitrate and ammonium formate, which are both soluble in water. The reaction vessel is cooled with ice to lower the temperature of the reaction system. The catalyst can be prepared by mixing a sulfoxide with an organic solvent such as methanol or ethanol. The reaction time for this process is about one hour at room temperature. This process has been industrialized and is used to produce imatinib, which is a drug that inhibits the activity of tyrosine kinases, enzymes that play a role in cellular signaling pathways. Imatinib has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and may be useful in treating leukemia and other cancers.
