It is involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA, and has been shown to be necessary for the replication of nuclear DNA. This compound also plays an important role in bone metabolism by regulating the formation and resorption of bone tissue. (1R,2S,5R)-Methyl-5R-hydroxy-[1,3]-oxathiolane-2R-carboxylate has been shown to have clinical effects on exostoses and body mass index in rats. In addition, this compound can be used as a biomarker for identifying individuals with osteoporosis.
