3-Methylthiophene is a semiconductor that has been shown to have synergic effects in combination with polymer or electrode materials. 3-Methylthiophene was found to be electrochemically active and it can be used as an electron donor or acceptor. It has a redox potential of -1.03 V and exhibits photocurrents at pH 2.0, 7.0, and 10.0. 3-Methylthiophene inhibited the growth of bacteria by binding to the bacterial membrane, which may be due to its low redox potential for oxidation/reduction reactions and its ability to bind to bacterial membranes by electrostatic interactions. 3-Methylthiophene also has been shown to have an analytical method for determination of trace levels of this compound in biological samples such as human serum or wastewater treatment plant effluent samples (solid phase microextraction).
