Malonic acid mono-tert-butyl ester is a malonic acid ester that can be synthesized in a scalable fashion. It has been shown to activate bacterial growth, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of L-alanine and L-aspartate. Malonic acid mono-tert-butyl ester can also be used as a precursor for the synthesis of amides and thermococcin, which are scaffold molecules for synthetic biology. This compound is produced by solid-phase synthesis from trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and magnesium salt in water. It has been shown that malonic acid mono-tert-butyl ester can be used as an inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase and biotransformations, such as carboxyesterification or phosphorylation. This active form is membrane permeable and has been shown to inhibit the growth of various bacteria, including Myc
