Molybdenum(VI) dichloride dioxide is a catalyst that is used in the production of epoxides. It is an efficient method for the conversion of hydrogen chloride to chlorine gas. Molybdenum dichloride dioxide can be prepared by reacting molybdenum with hydrogen chloride and an acid catalyst, such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. The reaction takes place at a temperature between -20 °C and 20 °C. Molybdenum dichloride dioxide can also be prepared by reacting molybdenum with chlorine gas at a temperature below 0 °C. This compound has been used as a catalyst in the production of ethyl diazoacetate from ethyl acetoacetate and dimethylformamide (DMF). Ethyl diazoacetate is a precursor to diisocyanates, which are used in the manufacture of polyurethanes.
