Meso-2,3-dimethylsuccinic acid (MDSA) is a molecule that is synthesized by the reaction of methyl groups with hexanedioic acid. It has been found to interact with metal surfaces, such as silver and copper, via microscopy. This interaction can be seen in the form of an increased reflectance and an increase in diffraction intensity. The functional theory behind this interaction suggests that MDSA binds to the surface through hydrogen bonding, which may also explain its stability at high temperatures. MDSA has been shown to desorb from the surface when heated or irradiated with light energy. Decanedioic acid is a chiral molecule that has been shown to be thermally and autocatalytically stable under conditions at atmospheric pressure.
