Description

5-Methyl-2-(methylthio)furan is a compound that has been found in the urine of cancer patients. It has an inhibitory effect on the growth of cancer cells and also inhibits the production of isovaleric acid, which is an organic acid that can be produced by bacteria. 5-Methyl-2-(methylthio)furan is also used as a carbon source for microbiological studies. The uptake and reaction products of this molecule are determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
