4-Methyl-4-(methylthio)pentan-2-one (MTPM) is an extractant. It is used to prepare samples for mass spectrometric analysis. The extraction process uses a mixture of MTPM and water. The mixture is heated to boiling, producing a vapor. The vapor expands and cools, condensing at the bottom of the extraction tube as a liquid. This extraction process can be repeated several times to increase the purity of the sample. 4-Methyl-4-(methylthio)pentan-2-one has been shown to be most effective in extracting oxime derivatives from tropical plants such as Acacia mangium and Terminalia catappa.
