Methylthioacetic acid is a hydroxy group containing compound that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase. It is a tautomer of methylthiourea. Methylthioacetic acid has been used in diagnostic studies as a radionuclide for imaging and for diagnosis, and has also been studied as a potential modifier of fatty acids. The mechanism of the inhibitory effect of methylthioacetic acid is not yet fully understood, but it is hypothesized that it may be due to its ability to form an amide bond with the enzyme.
