4-(Morpholin-4-ylmethyl)benzoic acid (4-MMBA) is a fluorescent probe for the detection of amines, which are compounds that contain both amino and carboxylic acid groups. 4-MMBA binds to amine groups in proteins, causing an increase in fluorescence intensity. This probe can be used for the detection of amines in different environments, such as in nerve cells or other biological samples. 4-MMBA has been used to detect p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP), a substrate for amine oxidases, which are enzymes that break down amines into ammonia and other products. 4-MMBA is also useful as a reagent in organic synthesis due to its ability to link molecules together through a functional group.
