Description

Methylthiomethyl p-tolyl sulphone is a carbanion that can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is prepared by the reaction of an alkyl halide with methyl mercaptan and sodium thiolate in the presence of base. Methylthiomethyl p-tolyl sulphone reacts with unsaturated ketones to form an alkylation product. This reaction is efficient and can be carried out at room temperature or below. The sulfoxide group can also be used for nucleophilic substitution reactions, such as the hydrolysis of esters and amides. In addition, methylthiomethyl p-tolyl sulphone has been shown to react with hydroxyl groups to form functional groups, such as aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols. These reactions are thermally induced and do not require any catalysts or solvents.
