5-Methyl tetrazole is a copper complex that reacts with water vapor to form a blue-colored complex. This compound is stable in deionized water and hydrochloric acid, but undergoes decomposition in the presence of chloride ions. 5-Methyl tetrazole has shown cytotoxic activity in vitro by binding to DNA and inhibiting RNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and cell division. The structural analysis of this compound shows that it exists as two tautomers: one with an unfilled p orbital and one with a filled p orbital. The activation energies for these tautomers are different, which means that the equilibrium between the two tautomers can be shifted by changing the pH of the solution. 5-Methyl tetrazole also exhibits photoelectron spectroscopy properties and has been shown to have potential application in solar cells.
