4-(Methylsulfonyl)benzoic acid is an organic compound that is used as a corrosion inhibitor. It can be synthesized by nitration of 2-aminoterephthalic acid with nitric acid and sulfuric acid. Impurities in 4-(methylsulfonyl)benzoic acid can arise from the presence of nitrogen, sulfur, or oxygen-containing compounds, such as fatty acids. The compound has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of radiation-induced corrosion on metal surfaces and is also used as a replacement for lead in the production of leaded gasoline. 4-(Methylsulfonyl)benzoic acid reacts with hydroxide solution to produce sodium benzoate and methyl sulfate. This reaction occurs when 4-(methylsulfonyl)benzoic acid is dissolved in water at high temperatures, forming hydrogen gas and methanol.
