It is a competitive antagonist of the h3 receptors, and has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity in vitro. 3-(3-Methoxyphenyl)propionic acid also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit lipase activity. This compound also has anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit tryptophan metabolism. 3-(3-Methoxyphenyl)propionic acid has been shown to have therapeutic potential for Alzheimer's disease, as it can cross the blood brain barrier and inhibits amyloid beta (Aβ) aggregation.
