Description

Methyl-p-benzoquinone is a chemical compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in oxidative injury, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Methyl-p-benzoquinone also inhibits the oxidation of sulfhydryl groups by forming stable complexes with proteins. The redox cycle of this compound is essential for its function.
Methyl-p-benzoquinone has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cellular respiration, which may be due to its ability to reduce proton levels and prevent the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
