• Description: Mefloquine is a drug that is used for the treatment of malaria. It binds to the heme moiety of the parasite's hemoglobin and prevents it from carrying oxygen. Mefloquine also blocks the parasite's ability to synthesize ATP, which is necessary for cell division. Mefloquine has been shown in clinical trials to be effective against falciparum malaria as well as other infections caused by parasitic organisms. The drug has been shown to have no significant adverse effects on eye health, although it can cause skin reactions such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Mefloquine inhibits drug-metabolizing enzymes, including cytochrome P450 and uridine diphosphate glucuronyl transferase (UGT). This may increase the risk of toxicity when mefloquine is taken with drugs that are metabolized by these enzymes.
