(S)-2-(Methylamino)-3-phenylpropanoic acid hydrochloride is a linear peptide that is extracted from natural sources. It inhibits the enzyme cathepsin B, which is involved in protein degradation and inflammation. (S)-2-(Methylamino)-3-phenylpropanoic acid hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of cyanobacteria and Symploca species. This compound also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the active site of cathepsin B and preventing cleavage of peptides by this enzyme. The configuration of the stereostructures can be determined by spectroscopic analysis. The configuration of (S)-2-(methylamino)3-phenylpropanoic acid hydrochloride can be determined by optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) or NMR analysis.
