2-(Methylsulfonyl)-10H-phenothiazine (2MPT) is a phenothiazine derivative that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. 2MPT can be prepared by reduction of sulfoxide with potassium hydroxide and acetone in chloroform. The reaction proceeds by displacement of chloride ion from the sulfoxide group to produce phenothiazine. Reduction of nitrobenzene with borohydride or hydrogenation reduction yields 2MPT. 2MPT is a ligand that binds to metal ions such as sodium, and can be prepared by combining dimethyl sulfoxide and methylene.
