Description

Methylamine is a colorless gas with a strong odor that is used as an industrial chemical and a precursor to other compounds. It is also marketed as an inhalant drug. Methylamine's neurodegenerative effects are due to its ability to inhibit protein kinases, which are enzymes that regulate the activity of other proteins in the cell. Methylamine has been shown to inhibit the influenza virus, which may be due to its inhibition of protein synthesis by interfering with the function of protein kinases. Methylamine was shown to have antitumor activity against human lung cancer cells in vitro and against breast cancer cells in vivo. This drug also has antibacterial properties, which may be due to its ability to induce cell death and inhibit cell growth.
