2-Methyl-4-hydroxymethylpyridine is a labile compound that is metabolically stable and has an affinity for the α2 adrenergic receptor. It has been shown to have anxiolytic-like activity in animal models, with a potency comparable to benzodiazepines. 2-Methyl-4-hydroxymethylpyridine can be synthesized by the lithiation of 2,3-dimethoxypyridine. The regioselectivity of this reaction can be optimised by using a chiral catalyst such as (-)-BINAP (1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene). This compound also has microsomal stability and can be used in vivo without chemical modification. The pyridines in this molecule are chemically stable and can be administered orally. This chemical is also an anxiolytic agent that does not induce dependence or tolerance.
